Naomi Litvin: Halloween 1988

Posted by Naomi Litvin

It was twenty-one years ago tonight, on a cold, windy, foggy Halloween night in San Francisco that about twelve of us gathered for the first night of an Adult Children of Holocaust Survivors group. The facilitator was Yigal Ben-Haim, an Israeli psychotherapist with a wooden leg, a survivor of the 1972 Yom Kipper War. We were all nervous, and had gathered there because although each of us, while successful in business, or the arts; had reached a point in our lives when things just weren't working.

We all had something ghoulish in common, one or both of our parents were either survivors of the death camps or survivors that were in hiding during the Holocaust of World War II. One by one, as we sat frozen in our seats around a big wooden table, we each told what our survivor parent/s had been through. Each of us had a different experience, yet we were instantly bonded through the manifestation of our traumatized childhoods. We had similar but different trauma, as we recounted our stolen childhoods, spent absorbing and processing the effects of the Holocaust on our parents.

Yigal wanted us to read the book Children of the Holocaust, by Helen Epstein. I remember ordering the book from a bookstore and dreading it's arrival. I read the book, page by page shaking and terrified to face what I knew had happened to me. I was not there, it didn't happen to me. Yet my life was shattered every bit as much as if I was a child of an alcoholic (which I wasn't).

My new friends in the group were diverse . One guy had been beaten regularly by his Survivor father. Every single one of us admitted to relationship problems. Several were divorced or never married. Half of the group were in Recovery. This was the beginning of understanding myself, of surrendering to the truth of why I am the way I am. Yes, it was 1988, the start of coming out of denial; and the answer about why I couldn't bring children into this world. Of why I was alone. Of who I would become.

Conversations with Naomi: Erica and Baxter

Posted by Naomi Litvin in

The mystery that is Erica and Baxter is somewhat solved by the following interview. Enjoy!

Naomi: What's up with the helmet in your Twitter avatar?

Erica
: That is a Boba Fett mask. Boba Fett is a bounty hunter in Star Wars. The picture was taken while on vacation in Disney World. I think it's pretty funny, which is why I used it as my avatar, though I'm sure it probably isn't.

Naomi: Who is Baxter really?

Erica:
Baxter is my dog, a 3 year old Shih Tzu. He's very cute and quite the snuggler. He is my furry life companion.

Naomi: You are making Aliyah to Israel next year-- a) why? b) how?

Erica:
a) I wish I had a good answer to this question! It's very hard to explain how I feel- I guess I just really love Israel. When I got back I really missed the place, I was thinking about how I could go back as soon as possible. But then I realized if I went there, I would never want to leave, so why not just make aliyah? Makes it easier for Baxter to come with. b) I'm saving up money and talking to Nefesh B'Nefesh.

Conversations With Naomi: David Appletree, Founder of Jewish Internet Defense Force # 1

It is an honor to present my first interview with David Appletree, the founder and leader of the Jewish Internet Defense Force. When my family was threatened with harm when I posted my book trailer on Youtube in July, I found the JIDF. I have been increasingly impressed by David's work ever since that day.

Naomi: Do you have any regrets about your JIDF work? Do you stand behind everything that you have done so far?

David: My only regret is trusting people. I regret that some people could not be reasoned with during various disagreements.

We Bathed In Love, a poem

Posted by Naomi Litvin

You know me by my pen name there was no time to explain
the whys, where, learning names
We bathed in love
and what was left
we watched nature
no human dead nor living
could put on canvas
a scene so splendid
Colors blended in perfection
a perfect scene.

My book sales are trending

Posted by Naomi Litvin

I have got to admit that my on-line book sales have been a bit slow lately. Hand to hand sales seem to go better for me. The Sonoma County Book Festival in Santa Rosa, CA on September 19th was very good. Even though it was 105 degrees and I didn't have a tent, it was well worth the drive up. My friend Katherine Boschetto showed up to support me. I appreciated all the comments and good wishes from all who stopped by my booth and even those who just smiled as they walked by. It was a perfect way for me to celebrate the Jewish New Year, 5770.

It also doesn't hurt to be working in a Red Cross Blood Services Canteen four mornings during the week. It is like a mini-town hall, or Twitter come live; and what a natural breeding ground for me to pitch my book to blood donors. I'm working on my screen adaptation, so that's been getting discussed too. All of this going on face-to-face with people!

Well, gotta get back to my Tweetdeck.

Swept Away

Since Yom Kipper, many of us that have been following the psychodrama of the deactivation of  David Appletree's personal account on Facebook and the attacks vs. support that has developed.

I have been swept away. The tide has taken me out and I am still waiting to come back onto the shore. Evolving out of the debacle, I have seen the good, bad, and ugly of an online war of sorts that has included love, hatred, back stabbing, triumph, diversity, healing, and who knows what more to come.

I have to admit that I myself came a bit unhinged in the face of this tzuris, and went wild in my defense of David against the vileness of his enemies. Something about the times that we are living in has made adulation of a man like David Appletree, like food for the starving. We need a hero to idolize; a Moses to lead us out of imminent catastrophe in the face of the hatred growing on the Internet, which I have heard described as getting bigger, faster than that of Nazi Germany in the 1930's.

Is it fair to put this burden on David Appletree? To defend us against terrorist groups on Facebook, Jihadist videos on YouTube, White Supremacist death threats, and whatever else can be imagined? No, probably not. But I don't see any other person stepping forward, willing to duel it out with these evil forces! The ADL, Simon Weisenthal Center and UJC are too busy primping in the mirror and; collecting tons of cash for big salaries and for whatever red herring they are dragging around. Groups like JStreet have Obama's ear. Forgive us David, for needing you so much. We need hope. We need strength. We need a hero.

Why do they care?

Two or more big mouth Tweeters are threatening to take down David Appletree and The Jewish Internet Defense Force.

I am not sure whether this is referring to the Facebook debacle, which has already banished (I hope temporarily) David Appletree for not providing his driver's license. Without David's boots on the ground we already see the proliferation of anti-Semitic terrorist propaganda growing on Facebook in the days since the Yom Kipper War against David Appletree, founder and leader of  JIDF.

Or is this a more serious threat from Brian Cuban (Mark Cuban's brother) and Loren Feldman (NYC comic and cyber-squatter)? These yentas are using Twitter to send cryptic conspiratorial threats to the JIDF.

Tonight is the JIDF Radio Show on Blogspot at 8 PM EST. David has challenged both of them to call in and debate the issues.

On Sukkos: Reminded of the Jewish will to prevail

Posted by Naomi Litvin

My brother Joseph builds a Sukkah every year for this Jewish holiday called Sukkos. The Sukkah is a temporary room built onto the back of his house where we should eat our meals in for seven days and remind ourselves how the ancient Israelites spent forty years in temporary dwellings roaming the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. Our Sukkah has an open roof, filled in with tree branches and brightly decorated with ribbons, ballons, and colored paper. Tonight my family and some dear friends had a very beautiful and spiritual meal and prayers.

We also celebrated my Mom’s 86th birthday and I asked her to tell us a story. She then pulled up the sleeve on her shirt, and said to the children at the table, “Have you ever seen a tattoo from Auschwitz?” They were curious, and came over to her to see her arm. The tattoo is faded, but still visible.

My mother said, “I was very, very happy that day when they tattooed me, because I knew then that I would live. They only tattooed those of us that were to survive.”

It made me think, that here we are in 2009, and again, we are at risk of being destroyed. Our enemies may try to tattoo us with their hatred, but it only confirms our will to live.

Can Facebook save face after seizing JIDF content?

Posted by Naomi Litvin

There has been a lot of drama in the last few days in regard to the Facebook and Twitter scene, as it relates to David Appletree, Fearless Leader of the JIDF, the Jewish Internet Defense Force. As of October 1, Facebook has not budged in returning David's content, after banishing him from Facebook in a Yom Kipper showdown.

Facebook suddenly decided to reverse their December 2008 decision, which had allowed an exception to their Terms of Service rule that users use their real names. David has not confirmed nor denied that David Appletree is his real name.

What is true, is that there have been many death threats against David and his family for the work that he does in taking down terrorist, anti-Semitic content from Facebook, YouTube, and other sites on the world wide web. Whether Facebook decides to let David Appletree back on as a Facebook user, is entirely up to them. But if they decide not to return his content, then they are in direct violation of their own Terms of Service, which clearly states that 'you own all of the content and information you post on Facebook.'
